Blue light therapy can cause temporary hyperpigmentation on darker skin tones. Fitzpatrick skin type V is described as “white, olive-toned”, and it is this tone and darker that may develop hyperpigmentation after exposure to blue light. We recommend discontinuing use if hyperpigmentation occurs.
Certain medical conditions, medications and chemicals are known to induce photosensitivity. Photosensitivity is a common side effect of various medications. These can include many commonly used medications, skincare, supplements, antibiotics, diuretics and steroids, St John's Wort, certain perfumes, antiperspirant, antibacterial soaps, artificial sweeteners, naphthalene (mothballs), petroleum products, brightening agents found in laundry detergent and cadmium sulphide (a chemical injected into the skin during tattooing).
