Comparison - Laser Hair Removal vs HPL

The technologies for home hair removal that currently exist and dominate the market are laser and intense pulsed light (IPL). Scientists and designers at Home Skinovations Ltd. have developed a newer innovative technology called Home Pulsed Light (HPL), which allows the benefits of the proven IPL technology to be used safely and effectively in an at-home environment. With two years of significant clinical results, HPL is a proven leader in the home hair removal market.

Both laser and IPL/HPL technologies generally use an intense beam of light for the removal of unwanted hair and based on the principle of selective photothermolysis. This is a selective manner of targeting pigment in hair shafts without damaging the surrounding skin when treating. Both technologies are equally applicable for women and men alike.

The Home Pulsed Light technology is highly superior and much more suitable for home use because of the following:

HPL technology provides two levels of safety: a skin sensor to detect skin color to eliminate any possibility of burns and a skin-touch mechanism that allows the system to fire only when there is direct contact with the skin.

HPL with its wide spectrum of light is good for a wide variety of hair colors. On the other hand, laser technology is based on a single wavelength of light, which is best suited for one hair color. Professional clinics that conduct laser hair removal usually use 2-3 different lasers with different wavelengths that enable them to treat a greater range of hair colors. HPL with its spectrum of wavelengths is suitable for a broader range of hair color, not confining efficacy.
If you were to consider wavelengths like a radio dial, lasers limit your ability so you could only tune into one station, while HPL allows you to use a range of stations, suited to your individuality.
HPL uses a low energy level with a high peak power to provide excellent hair removal results. On the other hand, laser hair removal uses a high level of energy which requires skin cooling with gel.

HPL has a much larger spot size (6 sq cm) and a high repetition rate allowing you to treat both your legs in under 25 minutes. Lasers, with a smaller spot size (up to 1 sq cm) and the same repetition rate means your treatment time is much longer for the same area.

HPL has a low energy level and a high peak power which allows for SensEpil hair removal to have no discomfort or that similar to a light elastic band. Laser hair removal has a higher energy level which may cause higher pain levels.

Due to the low joules of energy emitted in each HPL pulse, it is allowed for use on the face. Studies conducted with HPL technology on more than 60 patients show very noticeable results on the face after approximately 4 treatments.

Light Based Hair Removal

The process of laser and light-based hair removal is well known and established. It has been proven in clinical use around the world for over 15 years as a safe and effective way to achieve permanent hair removal.

Light-based hair removal is based on the theory of selective photothermolysis in which optical energy is used to disable hair growth. In order to achieve such thermal effect, the hair shaft needs to selectively absorb light energy and transform it into heat. This selectivity is achieved when high optical energy that is delivered to the tissue is mostly absorbed by hair shaft pigment, while the epidermis and the surrounding tissue is actively cooled (by a cooling mechanism). Melanin is the pigment in the hair shaft that is responsible for the absorption of the light, which generates the heat that eventually disables hair growth. When hair growth is disabled, permanent hair removal is achieved.

Home Pulsed Light(HPL)

Hair Growth Cycle

Every hair in our body goes through the three phases of the hair growth cycle: Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. These phases have an important impact on how the process of light-based hair removal works.Anagen is the hair growth phase while Catagen and Telogen, are both resting phases.

The time it takes to complete a full hair growth cycle varies from person to person and the location of the hair on the body, and for some individuals it may take 18-24 months. At any given moment the majority of the hair follicles in any skin area are in the resting stages. These resting hairs cannot be effected by laser or light hair removal treatment. However hairs in the growing Anagen phase will respond. It is therefore important to understand that it may take a full hair growth cycle to achieve complete results when doing any energy based hair removal.

It is important to understand more about HPL and how it works on the skin. As with any light-based or laser hair removal device, results are not immediate and may take a few treatments. Hair may appear to be growing back after a treatment, but typically after two weeks many of these hairs will simply fall out. In addition, hairs grow in three different stages and only hairs in an active growth stage will be affected by a SensEpil treatment. This is one of the main reasons that multiple treatments are required to achieve the desired result for any energy based treatment (whether at home or even in a clinic!)

Most people start to see noticeable results after four treatments, and great results after six treatments. Maintenance treatment are common after eight treatments to treat stray hairs that may have been in Telogen or Catagen phase or to treat patches of hairs that were missed in initial treatment.

What to Expect?

During a Silk'n SensEpil treatment:
For many people, using Silk'n SensEpil may be their first experience with a light-based device designed for self-treatment. Silk'n SensEpil is simple to use, and treatments are fast. During treatment it is normal to experience:
  1. A Flash of Light The bright light will not harm the eyes when applied to non-facial sites, and special eye-protection is not needed. When treating the face area, it is important to avoid the eyes.
  2. A Fan Noise The cooling fan in Silk'n SensEpil makes a noise similar to a hairdryer. This is normal.
  3. A Pop Sound with Each Pulse When a pulse of HPL light is activated, it is normal to hear a subtle pop sound simultaneously with the flash of light.
  4. Moderate Pressure of the Applicator This is necessary and helpful to enable adjacent pulses of light.
  5. Sensation of Warmth and Tingling During each pulse of light it is normal to feel a mild sensation of warmth and tingling from the light energy. Remember it is important to always use low energy settings for initial treatments.
The hair removal results for each person can be varied for many reasons. Hair color, density and location on the body all have an impact on the ultimate result. Environment may also play a role.

Another important factor affecting your hair removal result is the hair growth cycle, which is typically 18-24 months. You may notice after you are finished your treatment that suddenly you have a few stray hairs in the treatment area. Don't worry, these are just hairs that may have been dormant or "asleep" and just starting to grow. Just take out your SensEpil and give these hairs a zap and they should eventually go away.

It is common for hair to appear as if it is still growing up to two weeks after a treatment with SensEpil. This process is known as ejection and at around two-weeks youll see that these hairs grow in thinner, simply fall out or slide out with a slight tug. (We dont however recommend pulling on the hairs just let them come out naturally.) It is also possible that some hairs, due to missed treatment or different stages of growth, were not affected by the SensEpil treatment. These hairs will be treated in follow-up sessions, hence the need for multiple treatments in order to get the best results.

Sun Protection Is important

Extra care should be taken to avoid sun exposure before and after treatments with Silkn SensEpil. Acceptable means of sun protection are covering garments or sunscreen (SPF higher than 50) used continuously for 3 weeks before and after treatment.

Do not use SensEpil on naturally dark skin complexion

SensEpil removes unwanted hair by selectively addressing hair pigment. Varied quantities of pigment also exist in the surrounding tissue of skin. The quantity of pigment in a particular persons skin, or your skin complexion, determines the degree of risk they are exposed to using Silkn Flash & Go hair removal device.
Consequently treating dark skin with Silkn SensEpil and any other hair removal device, can result in adverse effects such as burns, blisters, and skin color changes (pigmentation changes.)
To address this issue, a unique SKIN COLOR SENSOR is embedded in the Silkn SensEpil to measure the treated skin complexion at the beginning of each session and occasionally during the session. The SKIN COLOR SENSOR ensures that pulses will only be emitted
