Kneehab is an innovative and clinically proven, garment-based Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) device. It is designed specifically to treat quadriceps atrophy (thigh muscle wastage). It re-educates the muscle by sending gentle electrical pulses through pads placed on the surface of the skin. This electrical stimulation applied to the motor nerve re-educates and strengthens the quadriceps muscle through cycles of contraction and relaxation.

Please note: The Kneehab is available for UK purchases / rentals only

What are the benefits of using Kneehab?

Easy to Use: Kneehab is a garment based (thigh wrap) 'all in one' product. Once it has been initially set up you just strap it on your thigh and switch the unit on. It features just one programme and there are no cables to worry about. It's usually used for 2 x 20 minutes sessions a day, but see our Q&A for more details.

What Healthcare Professionals Say About Kneehab:

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon

"I have been recommending neurotech's Kneehab unit to my knee injury patients for over twelve months and find it to be very effective adjunct during rehabilitation. Kneehab is a product that can aid rehabilitation across a range of knee injuries and conditions, from ACL reconstructions to total knee replacements. My patients have found Kneehab to be very effective in overcoming their quadriceps atrophy and their compliance has increased due to the convenience and ease of use of the product. By simplifying the application of stimulation to the quadriceps, Kneehab aids patients in returning to their normal lifestyle as soon as possible. I will continue to recommend Kneehab where quadriceps atrophy is an issue for my patients."Mr Richard Creedo

Chartered Physiotherapist

"EMS for knee rehabilitation is an excellent adjunct to any home exercise programme for quadriceps atrophy and inhibition. The ability to carry out home EMS allows time at the clinic to be optimised with clinician dependant treatment. Electrical Stimulation as part of a multimodal approach should enhance patient care while the ease of use of the Kneehab garment should increase patient compliance and satisfaction. EMS is a serious therapy that should be given due consideration in rehabilitation."
Mr Johnson McEvoy

What Patients Say About Kneehab:

Professional Footballer

"Through a combination of physiotherapy and Kneehab, I am now the fittest I have been in five years. I believe that many of my fellow professional footballers would benefit greatly from using Kneehab as an aid to returning back to full fitness following injury. I found Kneehab simple and comfortable to use, and would not hesitate to recommend it to anybody wishing to accelerate their return to the sport they love." Neil Mellor - ex-Liverpool FC and Preston North End, September 2008

ACL Patient

"I was introduced to Kneehab about 8 weeks prior to my ACL operation. I found it very easy to use and of great benefit to me in building up my quads to minimise post op wasting. I believe that it really helped me to reduce my recovery time to get back into full working and sporting order."
Mr. Denis Cashman

Knee Replacement Patient

"It is an excellent product, very easy to use and it definitely helped me to recover my quadriceps wastage experienced after my operation, I'd recommend it to anyone in the same situation".
Ms. Bronagh Stafford

Post Fracture Patient

"A great result! My physiotherapist was great to recommend it to me and I can't thank her or Kneehab enough. As a result, I was able to do the gardening, paint my house and for the first time in 15 months, drive the car. It has given me independence and the freedom to get on with my life. Thank you."
Ms. Dolores Stephenson

Arthroscopy Patient

I found Kneehab very good in the first couple of weeks after my arthroscopy. It allowed me to work on my quads, hence they were fully ready and built up for when I went back training."
Mr. Noel Kennelly

Knee Injury Patient

"I first used Kneehab 3 months after my injury which was recommended by my physio. The manual was easy to understand and simple to set up. I used it twice a day for 2 months. I would highly recommend Kneehab." Mr. Ronan Maher

Professional Ice Skater

"Someone of my age and body shouldn't be skating as much as I do. If you tally the distance I have skated constant stress on my knees is immense. Over the past 5 years I have suffered a lot of pain in both in my career I most probably have skated 3 or 4 time around the world. Skating is performed in a semi flexed position so the knees, because of various reasons - impact, constant use, tears etc. This past year I tried out Kneehab XP by neurotech. I found it very useful, I was able to manage pain and reduce swelling, thus keeping me going through an intense work period. It was easy to use. When I was actually working, or just relaxing, I was getting the benefits from its use. The Kneehab XP will now become part of my skating kit, because I believe it managed my knee issues, along with my very knowledgeable physio we overcame knee issues before they escalated into something less manageable."Christopher Dean OBE, Olympic Gold Medallist & Professional Ice Skater

Sports Physiotherapists

"Kneehab has been extremely useful in the early post-op stages of rehabilitation when muscle contraction is difficult to initiate due to surgical pain. It is easy to apply and reapply and the hand held unit is remarkably simple to use. In professional sport, where injury prevents competitive participation the Kneehab has become one of the many tools available to keep injury time out to a minimum.David Fevre MSc MCSP SRP,Senior Chartered Physiotherapist, Blackburn Rovers Football Club

I had the privilege of working with James Ellison, a leading competitor for the 2010 British Superbike title. James had the misfortune of suffering a serious crash whilst competing at Thruxton this April, sustaining a compound mid-shaft fracture of his right femur. Following surgery involving IM nail and interlocking screws, James visited the Isle of Man for twice-daily hyperbaric oxygen therapy and intensive daily physiotherapy with me. James initial progress was slow despite his diligent commitment to the rehab program, hampered as it was by tethering around the fracture site telescoping towards the bone. Nearly complete quadriceps inhibition had been present from the onset of treatment and there was a quads lag of 30 degrees.

At my suggestion, James incorporated the Neurotech Kneehab XP quadriceps muscle stimulator into his physiotherapy regime and he was keen on the idea to say the least! Jonathan, the neurotech clinical specialist provided ongoing technical support to push the protocol as aggressively as possible, liaising directly with James between physic sessions with advice on treatment progression.

The Kneehab XP performed brilliantly in addressing James inhibition issues and enabling him to overcome the quadriceps lag. I am very happy to say that in the space of five short weeks James made an almost superhuman recovery! He achieved full range of movement, very good quadriceps strength for this stage, and is even back riding his mountain bike!

James continues to use his Kneehab XP in increased weight bearing positions and has described the equipment as awesome. Both the surgeon and I are delighted with James progress and it was an incredible achievement for him to be able to return to racing so quickly at Mallory Park in July. Isla Scott, Scott Physiotherapy Clinic, Isle of Man.

The quadriceps muscle is the most important stabiliser of the knee. If you have suffered from a condition/injury the resultant pain and swelling often cause disuse, which leads to muscle weakness. An essential component of your rehabilitation post injury is strengthening of the quadriceps muscle and Kneehab is ideal for this purpose.

Kneehab Technology Explained:

About EMS: EMS re-educates the muscle by sending gentle electrical pulses through pads placed on the surface of the skin. This electrical stimulation applied to the motor nerve causes the muscle to contract, helping to strengthen and build up the muscle over time.

About Multipath: Kneehab incorporates Multipath, a patented breakthrough stimulation technology developed by Neurotech which enables Kneehab to deliver highly focused, accurately coordinated and comfortable quadriceps contractions. Multipath works by sending co-ordinated electrical pulses through the electrode pads on the skin. The co-ordination between the pulse strength and delivery results in an advanced form of EMS technology with greater comfort for the patient and stronger, more effective contractions of the muscle which results in better outcomes and faster recovery times.

There are two channels within Multipath, Channel 1 and Channel 2. - Channel 1 directly activates the VMO muscle, which is the main stabilizer of the knee. - Channel 2 activates the bulk quadriceps muscle which provides a strong, comfortable and highly effective contraction, or activation of the muscle.

Kneehab ACL Study

Published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine 20th July 2011, this shows strong evidence of the outcomes achievable by using the Kneehab.
Click here to read the ACL study

The study, which may have significant impact on patient outcomes, found that patients who utilize our Kneehab device to aid post operative rehabilitation:
Achieve significantly better strength and functional results at each time point (6 weeks, 12 weeks and 6 months) in recovery.
Return to pre-operative knee extensor strength, and to strength of the uninvolved leg, within 12 weeks, attaining pre-operative shuttle run speed by week 6 twice as fast as other groups in the study.
Return to work up to 7 days quicker than patients who complete exercise rehabilitation alone.

It is recommended that Kneehab be used in conjunction with voluntary exercise in order to optimise and control your rehabilitation.
