Sometimes I log on to Twitter, see that it’s “national turtleneck week” and think, urgh, really? They dedicated a whole week to that? But this week – I discovered that it’s CHOCOLATE week! Amazing!! Although every week is chocolate week for me, it’s nice to see the rest of the country joining in for once… I’m really looking forward to sharing some healthy (and not-so-healthy) chocolate recipes for over-indulging this week.
First up is the very indulgent spicy hot chocolate recipe, made with real chocolate, so you won’t get that powdery/ chalky after-taste you sometimes get with cocoa. There are a million and one variations for this recipe, I tried to list a few at the bottom. This is a perfect pick-me-up when the cold weather is creeping in, and the shorter days are calling for cosy knits and a good book.
Recipe – Spicy Hot Chocolate
Milk (I used semi-skimmed)
Dark Chocolate (The darker the better, and I used 15g per cup)
Pinch of ground cinnamon
Cinnamon sticks, to garnish, and stir
How to make it…
Warm the milk in a pan, but don’t let it boil!
Add the chocolate pieces and whisk until the chocolate is melted.
Add a pinch of cinnamon, and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
Serve in a warmed glass, next to a fireplace with a good book and a labrador puppy curled up at your feet! (I wish!)
Some Hot Chocolate Variations
- Make it a grown-up drink, add kahlua, baileys, or a cherry liqueur.
- Go vegan with some soya, oat, or almond milk, and some vegan dark chocolate.
- Add ginger or chilli for an extra spice kick.
- Add marshmallows if you’re making it for kids (or, y’know, for yourself)
- Add a bit of cream for an extra indulgent treat.
